My Story

Welcome to Spalted Sparrow Studios! I'm Kieran, the founder and woodworker behind this studio. From a young age, I've had a deep appreciation for all things creative. I would spend hours drawing and painting, making messes, experimenting with some new far-fetched idea for making something I could see in my mind's eye. I learned a lot from dreaming big, failing, adjusting, and dreaming some more.
 

My love for creating eventually led me to my passion for woodworking. I started out experimenting in my parents' garage and patio, tearing apart old furniture and trying out different materials and techniques. I once cut down my loft bed and used the wood to build an Adirondack chair. I made a desk out of copper piping. I used a wood frame, chicken wire, plaster, and a wood slab to make a surfboard table on a wave. I made a log lamp. Lets just say that some of my ideas were better than others.  

As I honed my skills (and obtained my own space to make messes in), I became more ambitious in my projects and expanded my creative repertoire. Today, I specialize in crafting custom pieces that are both beautiful and functional. From cutting boards and coffee tables to consoles, record player stands and wall art, I take pride in creating pieces that are unique, meticulously crafted, and built to be used and to last.

When I'm not in the studio, I enjoy playing the trumpet in a local community band and finding new fun to express my creativity through music. I also love to unwind with video games and keep up with my favorite sports teams, including San Diego State and Penn State athletics and the Padres baseball team. I love stove top popcorn, gin and tonics, and time with friends and loved ones. And I'm a fiercely loyal friend.
